Cowgirl Creamery Cheeses

Cowgirl Creamery originated in Marin County in California and a couple of years ago, the owners opened up a second location in downtown D.C.  Simply put, the cheeses are divine and the best to be found anywhere in the area.  Cowgirl Creamery makes their own cheeses but also sells artesian cheeses from around the world.  We currently have the following cheeses for sale:

  • Point Reyes Farmstead Blue Cheese Wedges
  • Old Chatham Sheepherding Company’s Hudson Valley Camberbert
  • Cowgirl Creamery’s Mt. Tam (a triple cream)
  • Cowgirl Creamery’s St. Pat (a seasonal cheese for Spring rinsed in nettles – a very mild, light cheese)
  • Cypress Grove Fog Lights (thick, compact disk of goat cheese wrapped in organic ash)

We are also carrying the fantastic flatbread crackers carried by Cowgirl Creamery in Sea Salt, Sweet Onion & Crème Fraiche and Wild Mushroom.

As Cowgirl Creamery’s cheese inventory always is changing, we’ll have different cheeses in stock throughout the year as well.

A few words about Olive Oil from the importer…

The laws in Europe are clear, but in the U.S., they are not. So . . . CAVAET EMPTOR!!!  A lot of inferior olive oil sold here as Extra Virgin would not even come close to meeting the European standard.  The term "Extra Virgin" is the internationally recognized designation for the top grade of food-quality olive oil.  Most nations that produce olive oil are parties agree to meet established high standards that all true "extra virgin" oils.  The U.S. does not.  There are no federal regulations governing the use of the "Extra Virgin" designation in the American marketplace.  Consequently, the consumer is offered a huge assortment of "Extra Virgin" oils - many of which, most definitely, are not!

Free fatty acids (FFA) are an indicator of oil quality.  FFA levels for Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOO) have to be below 0.8% according to international standards.  The only olive oils this company carries are EVOOs and all are organic and/or biodynamic.  Olive oil deteriorates with exposure to air and light.  The importer recommends keeping oils in an air-tight bottle or container protected from heat and light.
